50 things to do instead of drinking

Boredom, amongst other things, has been shown to contribute to us drinking more (case in point: lockdown). Whether you’re cutting down or giving up completely it makes sense to think about what you can build into your time to avoid getting bored and being tempted to reach for a drink!

Not sure where to start? We’ve come up with a list of 50 things you can do instead of drinking to inspire you! (Try to do time doing these things at the times of day you’d be most likely to want a drink!)

Exercise 
  • Go for a run
  • Go cycling
  • Join a gym/local class
  • Play a sport
  • Join a dance class (in person or online)
  • Do an online workout
  • Find a Yoga class on Youtube
Mindfulness
  • Go to a meditation group (in person or online)
  • Follow a mindfulness exercise on a mindfulness app
  • Get involved in some mindful ‘doing’ e.g. eating, cooking, walking, driving (see our blog all about this!)
Cooking
  • Sign up to a weekly recipe box subscription
  • Go to a cooking class(in person or online)
  • Try a new recipe per week (found online or in a recipe book)
  • Practice a new cooking skill (baking, pizza making, fermentation etc.)
Art
  • Take an art class (in person or online) 
  • Get inspired by Pinterest arts and crafts
  • Get some mindful colouring books
  • Paint stones or a piece of furniture
Work on a new skill
  • Take up a craft you’ve not tried before like knitting or crochet
  • Learn a language
  • Learn to use photoshop
  • Try out video editing
  • Learn an instrument
  • Experiment with makeup or face paint
Start a project
  • If you’re great at making things start an online shop
  • Start a Youtube channel
  • Write a blog
  • Create a website about something you’re passionate about
  • Do some DIY in your house
  • Redecorate a room

Get outdoors
  • Go for a walk
  • Join a walking or mountaineering group
  • Try out Geocaching
  • Do some gardening

Play 
  • Get the board games out at home or visit your local board game cafe

  • Find your local crazy golf (it’s become a bit of a trend!)

Feel good
  • Volunteer in your local community
  • Reconnect with old friends
  • Join a local group to meet people with similar interests
  • Go to the cinema
  • See some live music
  • Go to a comedy club/show
  • Give yourself a spa evening (bath, facemask, nails, fake tan – whatever makes you feel good!)
  • Go to a restaurant you’ve always wanted to try
